Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has said the new edifice of the Benue Geographic Information Service (BENGIS) Digitization project commissioned on Monday will attract a $2.5 million World Bank grant for other developmental projects.

Ortom made the assertion during the inauguration of the Benue State Geographic Information Service Centre at the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Solid Minerals in Makurdi.

He said the inauguration of the edifice, which is a component of the BENGIS digitization project, marked a milestone in the history of his administration and could not have come at a better time given the increasing role of land assets in the socio-economic development of Benue people.  

“With the commissioning of this historic project today, we have achieved the international best practice in land administration in the state.

“I am optimistic that this project will attract the World Bank’s grant of USD$2.5 million through SFTAS programme to be applied for developmental projects in the state,” he said.

The governor noted that the numerous challenges associated with land administration in the state had been reduced to the barest minimum since the commencement of the BENGIS project while the land digitization initiative also greatly improved urban planning, infrastructure development, environmental management and encouraged private investment. 

Meanwhile, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who performed the commissioning of the edifice, said the project was an “impactful one” that would not only address land administration challenges in the state but also increase revenue generation. 

Earlier, the State Project Manager of BENGIS, Mario Bajouk, emphasised that with the BENGIS Service Centre, “we establish a one-stop shop for all land matters.”
