Mr Terna-Kester Kyenge, the Chairman of Logo Local Government Council, made this known in an interview with newsmen.
Kyenge, who is also the Chairman of the Benue chapter of Association of Local Governments in Nigeria (ALGON), said that the sensitisation programme had yielded positive results in the three senatorial zones of the state.
“Over 60 per cent of the local governments in the state are now being involved in educating the people in anti-open defecation and sanitation activities.
“It is so far so good for us in Logo council and in other local governments like Ado, Agatu, Gwer West, Gboko and Buruku,’’ he said.
Commenting on the five million U.S. dollars (about N800 million), which the Global Sanitation Fund donated to Benue and Cross River, Kyenge said that part of the resources would be channelled into capacity building for the communities.
He said that the money would also be used to construct dams, boreholes and water harvesting facilities in areas where bore holes could not be drilled.
“Water and sanitation are the major points which have been underscored; we will provide clean potable water and basic sanitation through public-private partnership arrangements.
“However, most of the money is going into training and capacity building,’’ he said.
Kyenge, however, said that there were no basic criteria for selection of beneficiary communities, adding that the communities were randomly selected because the main objective was to provide water and good sanitation for all. (NAN)
