Benue residents decry burglary incidents

Residents of Makurdi in Benue State have raised concerns over the increasing cases of house burglary.

Our correspondent reports that the residents, particularly in the High Level, Wadata and David Mark Bypass areas, complained about their homes being burglarised either during the day or during the night.

Ene Odoh, who lives by the David Mark Bypass, said they returned from church on a Sunday and discovered that their house was burgled.

She said, “They scaled our high fence, tore the mosquito nets on the windows and used some implements to widen the iron protectors to allow them passage. They stole all our communication gadgets.”

Another victim, Nina Ternongo, said that her family members were asleep when their house at High Level was broken into and their phones stolen.

She said, “It has become rampant for residents in High Level to go to bed and wake up in the morning to see their windows or doors tampered with by thieves. It appears they pour some substances which put occupants to deep sleep during which they search the house and take away phones and laptops.

“In our house, they took everyone’s phone kept in the parlour when they passed through the window into the house while we were sleeping. When we woke up and raised alarm, our neighbours and everyone in the compound also raised alarm that their phones had been stolen.”

Veronica Humphrey, who lives in the vicinity of Happy Home, said she returned from work to find that her window was tampered with and her sister’s handbag stolen.

The residents, therefore, called on the security agencies to come to their aid.

Contacted, the state’s police spokeswoman, SP Catherine Anene, urged victims to report incidents to the police, adding the need for the residents to work with security operatives in order to apprehend the culprits.
