Benue: SEMA identifies 12 LGs susceptible to flood

The SEMA’s Executive Secretary, Adikpo Agbatse said that 11 out of the marked councils would possibly top the list of the expected flooding while the agency has identified 28 evacuation sites for emergency exit.
Agbatse expressed optimism that the state was prepared for the predicted flood as relevant stakeholders have been assigned responsibilities and that they already know what to do to tackle the situation headlong.
He said that logistics to cater for the prospective displaced persons would be soon released by the state government in further preparation for the impending emergency.
The SEMA boss assured that there was nothing to fret about since the state’s level of preparedness was far ahead of the federal government’s plan in mitigating against any danger that may lie in the future.
“We started preparation in April with a stakeholder’s conference held in Gboko. There is no need to panic as logistics will soon be released by the state government to cater for those who will be displaced in the event of flooding. “We are very prepared even ahead of the federal government for the expected flood”.
Agbaste further added that more than 45,000 people were projected to be displaced from their homes this year as against the 35,000 persons displaced in the state last year.
