The two-day golf fiesta, which parades 200 golfers across the country was last won by Evelyn Omonye of Ikoyi Golf Club during last year’s edition of the annual tournament.

Lady Captain of the IBB Golf Club, Wosilat Nana Abubakar, who spoke to Feverpitch moment after the tee off yesterday, said she was optimistic that the Abuja ladies have prepared well for the tournament and are ready to win the top prize this year.

She however expressed fears that with the absence of the club’s top star Uloma Mbuko who has turned professional, the expectation could turn out a mirage.

Speaking further, Nana Abubakar expressed satisfaction with the number of participants at this year’s event, which features golfers in handicap 0-28 category and handicap 29-36.

“This event is an Open and we expect lady golfers all over the world, but based on the records available as at yesterday, I am not sure those from outside the country have come, even though we expected golfers from Ghana and Senegal to be here.

“But we have lady golfers from all the Nigerian golf clubs. We have 80 golfers from outside and 120 from our club who are participating in two categories, and that is handicap 0-28 and handicap 29-36. Those in handicap 29-36 are participating as guest players and will play for one day, while those in handicap 0-28 will play for two days.

“This tournament is supposed to produce the best golfer among the ladies in Nigeria and at the end of the day the best gross winner will emerge the champion of the yearly event”, she stated.
