The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has escalated its probe into betting allegations, expanding the investigation to include more players after fresh information emerged during an inquest involving former Plateau United goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka.
Adeyinka, who had been suspended from registering with any NPFL club, appeared before the panel last Thursday at the NPFL office in Abuja, accompanied by his legal representative.
The inquiry centered on allegations that he refused to sign a contract clause with Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) that forbade betting and match-fixing.
“The NPFL has now written to commend the player for cooperating with the panel and offering further insights that has necessitated a wider investigation involving some others,” disclosed Davidson Owumi, the NPFL Chief Operating Officer, who chaired the inquest.
In a letter sent to Adeyinka, the NPFL confirmed that his suspension had been lifted pending the outcome of the expanded investigation.
“It is only fair that your career is not jeopardised while investigation hasn’t been concluded, hence the suspension placed on your registration in the NPFL has been lifted. You are free to register for any club of your choice. We thank you for your prompt response and cooperation,” the communication read.
Adeyinka has consistently denied any wrongdoing, reiterating his position in a Facebook post where he explained why he initially questioned the betting clause in the 3SC contract.
“During the contract negotiation phase (with 3SC), I reviewed the agreement and noted a clause related to contract termination in the event of betting allegations.
“I requested clarification on the criteria used to determine such allegations, as some clubs may rely on rumours, speculation, or public opinion. I emphasised that I would be willing to sign the contract if the club agreed to base their judgment on concrete evidence,” Adeyinka wrote.
It was further gathered that several of Adeyinka’s former Plateau United teammates, who were mentioned in WhatsApp exchanges now in the league’s possession, will also be summoned by the NPFL panel.
This latest probe follows similar controversies last season when the NPFL investigated Lobi Stars over allegations of match-fixing. The club’s media officer, Emmanuel Ujah, who made the claims against players, was eventually banned after the inquiry.
