Speaking to Complex, however, her inspiration for the newly released album comes down to three people: Odd Future’s Frank Ocean, rapper Kanye West, and hubby Jay-Z.

Upon hearing Frank Ocean’s material, he was asked to co-write the track ‘I Miss You’: “I noticed his tone, his arrangements, and his storytelling.  I immediately reached out to him – literally the next morning.  I asked him to fly to new York and work on my record.”

Meanwhile, Kanye West was drafted in to produce the track ‘Party’.  As an admirer of his work, Beyonce admitted that his single ‘Runaway’ (from the album ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy) made her cry: “the fact that he’s belting out his pain, his confusion, and his anger, with no pre-written lyrics was so moving.  He’s singing his heart out for five minutes.  He is so vulnerable.  I love when an artist can be so honest.”

And then there’s the influence of her husband Jay-Z: “Jay’s music is more than music.  His lyrics have fathered generations.”
