Presenting the draft National Water Resources Bill to the Ministry of Water Resources, Professor Joe Goldface-Irokalibe the chairman, technical/legal sub-committee of the Inter-ministerial Committee on the bill, said the bill would end the idea of uniform billing system on water in the country.
“It is no longer the case of one uniform tariff system across the country. In the semi-arid area of the north, the problems associated with water is not the same as in the Delta region,” he said.
He said that the proposed bill would also ensure that water management in the country is carried out from the highest hydrological level.
The bill would also facilitate the participation of stakeholders in hydrological regions in the formulation of key policies that would assist in the efficient management of water resources in the country.
Also speaking at the event, Mr Baba Umar Faruk, Permanent Secretary in the ministry noted that the country’s water sector was bedevilled with series of challenges that had to do with management of resources due to lack of an enabling legislation.
“In recognition of the inadequacies in the exiting National  Water Resources Law of 1993, the ministry opted to address all the challenges and inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee,” he added.
