Bills to Establish National Women, Children Hospitals in Ideato Pass First Reading at Reps

The House of Representatives at the plenary on Thursday passed for first reading two bills seeking to establish National Hospital for Women, Ideato, Imo State, and National Children’s Hospital, Ideato, Imo.

The proposed legislations, “National Hospital for Women, Ideato, Imo State (Establishment, etc) Bill, 2024 (HB.1426) and National Children’s Hospital, Ideato, Imo State (Establishment, etc.) Bill, 2024 (HB.1427) were sponsored by the lawmaker representing Ideato north, south federal constituency, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere.

For the women hospital bill made available to journalists, it states that, “The Bill seeks to establish a National Hospital for Women in Ideato, Imo State to specialize in the promotion of reproductive and maternal health, the research, prevention, sensitization and treatment of obstetrics fistula and for related matters. There shall be established a National Hospital for Women, Ideato, Imo State (in this Bill referred to as “the Hospital”).

“The Hospital/ (a) shall be a body corporate;
(b) may sue and be sued in its corporate name;
(c) shall have perpetual succession and a common seal. There is hereby established for the management of the Hospital a Board of Management (in this Act referred to as “Board”) which shall be constituted and have the functions and powers set out in this Act.

“The Board shall consist of- a chairman; the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital;
(c) the Director of Clinical Services;
(d) the Director of Administration;
(e) the Director of Finance;
(f) the Director of Research;
(g) the Director of Maintenance;
(h) a representative of the Federal Ministry of Health;
(i) a representative of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development;
(j) a representative of the Family Support Trust Fund;
(k) a representative of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency- NPHCDA;
(l) a representative of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives;
(m) a representative of the host community.

The chairman and members of the Board, other than ex-officio members, shall be – appointed by the President; and persons of proven integrity and ability.”
