The Commissioner of Police, Kaduna state, Austine Iwar has said that three units of Mobile Police (MOPOL) have been deployed to Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna state following Saturdays attack with a view to further securing the area.
The CP however assured that the force is putting in all efforts to ensure the culprits are brought to book.
He however urged citizens assist the police by reporting any suspicious person(s) to the nearest police station in order to nip in the bud cases of crime and criminality.
In a related development, Birnin Gwari stakeholders have called on Kaduna state government to establish a formidable Community Policing team in Bimin Gwari which will include the police as well as local vigilante in the area called “Yan Sa Kai.”
This is contained in a joint press statement on the escalation of security in the area and the need for government to empower policing which was signed by Chairman, BEPU, Murtala Abdullahi, Coordinator, Yan Birnin Gwari, Comrade Muhammad Randag, Chairman, Birnin Gwari Empowerment and Development Forum, Junaidu Lawal, and President B/Gwari Students Association (BIGSA), Ibrahim Aliyu Barau.
They said, “In more recent times, cases of armed robbery and kidnappings have escalated in villages around Birnin Gwari town and on the major Highways linking Birnin Gwari to some states. The issue is increasingly becoming more agonizing and disquieting. Lives of innocent and indefensible citizens are being killed on daily basis, their property dispossessed and means of living highly threatened.”
While acknowledging the efforts and interventions of both the Federal Government and the Kaduna state government in curtailing these issues, they said, “The vexing problem appears to defy solutions and regenerate in a more clandestine form.”
They added, “The recent happenings where armed robbers waged more assaults against the people of Birnin Gwari, killing several citizens and dispossessing several others of their valuables is worrisome.
“In the villages under Birnin Gwari local government area, armed robbers attack them and kidnap people arbitrarily demanding for high ransoms on regular intervals. It is evident that some of these cases could have been intercepted if there was permanent military presence in some of these villages, a development that necessitated that government should recognize and support our people so that they can use their skills to consolidate government’s efforts in curbing the insecurity that almost crippled everything in our communities.”
They however stood by the outcry by the emir of Birnin Gwari Malam Zubair Jibril Mai Gwari 11, where he called on his people to rise up and challenge the armed bandits to secure their lives and property.
“We call on the Kaduna state government to establish a formidable Community Policing in Bimin Gwari. We want the government to support the “Yan Sa Kai so as our people who are being killed, kidnapped, intimidated and threatened on daily basis can rise up and become defensive against Armed Robbers and hold at bay our property and provide,” they said.
