Bisola Akeju, a Computer Management Specialist at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission in Nigeria, has been named IT Support and Management Professional of the Year at the 10th anniversary edition of the Nigeria Technology Awards (NiTA).
The award ceremony, organised by Beta Media recognised outstanding contributions across Nigeria’s technology ecosystem, including enterprise IT leadership, innovation, cybersecurity, telecommunications and digital infrastructure.
Widely known within the sector as NiTA, the awards platform is regarded as one of Nigeria’s longest-running stand-alone technology recognition initiatives, with a decade-long history of honouring individuals and organisations driving growth and innovation in the industry.
Akeju received the award for her contributions to information technology support, systems management and operational efficiency within USAID Nigeria, where she has served since September 2022.
Before joining USAID Nigeria, she spent 12 years at the United States Embassy in Abuja as a Computer Management Assistant.
Within the USAID mission, Akeju has overseen the installation and maintenance of the agency’s GLAAS procurement system and ASIST financial systems database. She also helped establish an off-site disaster recovery facility and manages the Post Safe Emergency Alert Database System.
As part of her responsibilities, she conducted cybersecurity awareness and partner-application training for more than 250 implementing-partner staff across Enugu, Kano and Ibadan.
Her professional experience also includes a six-week temporary duty assignment at the United States regional post in Yaoundé, Cameroon, where she served as the sole information technology support officer for over 200 staff members.
The recognition comes in a year in which Akeju was also admitted into the Project Management Institute’s certified community as a Project Management Professional (PMP).
Her professional certifications include Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certificate in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC), ITIL V4, CompTIA Security+, and multiple Microsoft server and infrastructure certifications.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Lagos State University, a Master’s degree in Business Information Technology from Middlesex University, London, and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Portsmouth.
Akeju is also a member of the British Computer Society.
Before joining the United States Embassy in 2010, she worked as a Systems Administrator at the British High Commission in Abuja, where she supervised the restructuring of the mission’s IT infrastructure and the rollout of satellite internet connectivity across diplomatic compounds.
She also previously served as IT Services Systems and Database Administrator at Suburban Telecom in Abuja, handling database design, network deployment and payroll and intranet portal development.
Industry observers say the inclusion of categories focused on IT support and operations professionals reflects growing recognition of the critical role back-end technology personnel play in sustaining organisational efficiency and digital security.
For Akeju, the latest recognition further highlights a career spanning more than two decades in information technology, cybersecurity, systems administration and project management.
