Kevin-Prince Boateng’s fantastic solo run gave the Black Stars an opening goal in the 5th minute of the first half. Clark lost the ball on the half-way line and Boateng picked up the ball and ran on and on, before drilling a well-placed shot to Tim Howards right.

In the 60th minute, Jonathan Mensah brought down Dempsey in the box, giving the Americans a penalty, which was excellently converted by London Donavan. Donavan got it right by burying the ball in the far corner of the net, sending Richard Kingston the wrong way.

From that moment, American appeared to have been rejuvenated, but all their efforts were thwarted by Richard Kingston’s superb safes. The two teams could not be separated within the regulation and in the third minute of the extra time, Asamoah Gyan puts Ghana back in front.

Ayew looped the ball over the top, finding Gyan who showed fantastic desire by beating DeMerit to the ball and firing an unstoppable effort past Tim Howard to register the second goal that earned his country a berth in the quarter finals.

The United States were eliminated from the World Cup by Ghana for the second straight time. Ghana will now meet Uruguay in the quarter-finals at the Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg.
