Blackout: How Daily Trust report wiped tears of residents of Osun community

The joy of residents of the Oke-Ibukun community, Ajetunmobi area, Ido-Osun, Osun State, knew no bounds as the five-month blackout in the community came to an end with the donation of a 500kv transformer by Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke, sequel to a report by Daily Trust on Monday, January 29, 2018.

The Chairman of Oke-Ibukun Development Association, Mr Amuda Adebayo, said that a few days after the publication, one of the aides of the senator called him and told him that the voice of the community had been heard and that the people of the community would smile in a couple of days.

“We thank Daily Trust. Just three days after the publication of our story on January 29, 2018, I got a call from the Personal Assistant of Senator Ademola Adeleke and he told me that our voice had been heard.

I was wondering what he meant because the senator was the last person I expected to provide the transformer for us.

“The aide told me that we would get the transformer in a couple of days. Surprisingly, the senator gave us a brand new transformer and we are so happy. We are very grateful to Senator Adeleke for this gesture and we are grateful that light has come back to this community.

“We had been thrown into total darkness since September last year that the transformer in the community developed a fault and eventually packed up. The situation exposed the people of the community to serious danger, particularly in the hands of men of the underworld,” he said.

Another community leader in the area, Alhaji Akintayo Fatai, said life had been very difficult in the community since the old transformer packed up and lauded Senator Adeleke for donating the transformer to the community.

Akintayo said, “Life has been very meaningless in this community in the last five months. When Daily Trust published the story, we were happy that we were able to speak out. We were expecting that the state government would act and help us. Surprisingly, the help came from Senator Ademola Adeleke, even when we didn’t expect it from him. We are grateful to him.”
