A former Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles star striker, Aondofa Akosu has said Nigerian football fans who are holding the technical adviser of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, responsible for the team’s shambolic performance against the Wild Beasts of Central African Republic are barking at the wrong tree.
On Thursday, a relatively unknown Central African Republic team came to Lagos and shocked the star-studded Super Eagles 1-0 in their FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifying match played at the Teslim Balogun stadium.
The Super Eagles who dominated proceedings failed to make their dominance count as they couldn’t manage a single shot on target despite parading Victor Osimhen of Napoli, Kelechi Iheanacho of Leicester City, Taiwo Awoniyi of Union Berlin and Captain Ahmed Musa in the attack.
Consequently, disappointed football fans have continued to call for the immediate sack of the Franco-German coach whose best performance in five years with the Super Eagles remains the bronze medal at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.
However, Akosu, a member of Scotland 1989 Golden Eaglets squad has a different opinion as he believes it was the players that let down the teeming football fans.
He said the Super Eagles don’t need a coach to play against a lowly rated team like the Central African Republic.
“Those blaming Gernot Rohr are making a big mistake. Super Eagles players overwhelmed by the Central African Republic and we are calling for the head of the coach?
“To me the players are the problem. This is a country we can win without a coach on the bench, so the players are the ones to blame,” insisted the former BCC Lions deadly attacker.
The Super Eagles have an opportunity to redeem themselves in the return leg this afternoon in Douala, Cameroon.
