What are the causes and a big who are to be blamed of this phenomenon? For blame should be apportioned to government for its failure to look deep into the retrogression of the educational system in Nigeria. Inadequate funding of educational institutions from the government contributed. The government keeps on designing curricula for schools to improve its standard, yet nothing seems to be done,

The buildings are decaying, no furniture’s, many teachers are unqualified, there are libraries without reading materials, and there are no incentives for teachers.

Secondly, there is lack of parental guidance and encouragement. Parents are less concerned about what their children do at school. Parents take their wards to school without providing the major textbooks needed. The most annoying aspect is, when a teacher scolds a child, the pupil’s parents become offended. Gone are those days when a teacher was well respected and seen as a role model. In the past, when a child was beaten, he dared not tell his parents or guardian, else his punishment would be doubled.

Thirdly, some teachers are not really doing their work of training the children. They rather sit in their offices doing all sorts of things or travelling from here to there, they give one excuse after another.

Fourthly, children depend on the mercenaries hired by their parents to write examination for them. For this reason, they are not bothered about reading their textbooks.

If only everybody begins to play a role without relenting, definitely the standard of education will not only improve, but would have great impact on the lives of everyone.
