Yemi Blaq and Eucharia Anunobi are part of the cast for the new movie, ‘Searching’ written by Josephine Anumbo.
The movie focuses on a girl married off against her will who although still a child herself gets pregnant and is in an abusive marriage. Her life’s dreams are aborted. We look at the role those who have got it right in life can play in helping such people get back on track. Sadly, she runs into trouble again and got hooked with a married man and has a child with him.
The movie looks at the plight of this child born out of wedlock, an absentee father and a not too empowered mother. We look at them and how they can get it right and impact society.
Anumbo explained that ‘Searching’ looks at society where there are so many young people who have missed their way for one reason or the other. “Some of the older ones who haven’t been able to make headway in their lives are also made reference to in the movie and there are reasons these things happen to them,” she said.
In finding the right cast for the movie Anumbo said: “we looked through artistes who had the figures, characters and speech to portray the characteristics of the characters and what they portrayed in the movie. That was how we settled for Yemi Blaq, Eucharia.”
Seh added that: “We wanted the movie to make the artistes not the other way round. We did massive auditioning across the country to come up with the characters for the other roles.”
Elements from the 80s like the cars, telephone and magazines used as props in the movie were reminiscent of the things the script writer observed at the time she began writing the story 19 year ago.
Anumbo who is also a counsellor and founder of the Love to the World Initiative is a Non-Governmental Organization with a mission to enlighten, counsel, uplift and encourage the downcast and less privileged, said it was important to portray how animalistic violence against women are and how some of them could boomerang. As with the case of Mr Emi (Yemi Blaq) who was willing to pay N80, 000 to a ‘prostitute’ not realising it was his daughter whom years ago, he had refused N5, 000 for tuition.
The movie is set for launch in November 26
