A 65-year-old blind man was rescued while attempting to jump into the Lagos lagoon with his two children.

The man, identified as Ewenla Ibrahim Adetomuwa, reportedly went to the centre of the 3rd Mainland Bridge, along with his sons, aged 16 and 12, due to his inability to provide for his family.

According to witnesses, Adetomuwa and his children were about to leap over the railings when they were spotted by a concerned passerby, who quickly intervened. When asked why he wanted to take such a drastic step, the man explained that he could no longer bear the burden of his family’s financial struggles.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident.

He stated that around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, a blind man and his two children were spotted on the 3rd Mainland Bridge, attempting to commit suicide by jumping into the lagoon.

Hundeyin added that a good Samaritan alerted the police, who quickly responded to the scene.

“The police team found Ewenla Ibrahim Adetomuwa and his two children on the bridge. The man, who hails from Ikorodu, said he intended to take his own life so the government could take responsibility for his children after his death,” Hundeyin said.

Authorities are currently working to reach his wife and provide further support to the family, he added.
