Blue House has emerged as the winner of the Government Day Secondary School Karu-Jikwoyi Inter-House Sports Festival which ended recently at the school playground.

At the end of the sports festival which featured different sporting events like football, handball, basketball, volleyball and table tennis, Blue House garnered a total of 272 points to place first while Yellow House came second with 202 points, Green House amassed 176 points to come third while Red House came fourth with 158 points.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, a former minister of sports and Special Guest of Honour, Barrister Solomon Dalung, commended the school authority for organising the sports festival and said the only way for Nigeria to excel at international tournaments again was to revive Inter-House sports competitions.

“Let me commend the efforts of the organisers of this sports festival.

“When Nigeria was great in sports, it was because there was a fantastic relationship between schools and institutional sports which served as a production factory of talents.

“Immediately we de-emphasised school sports and even proceeded to ban school sports, we forgot that we had also banned Nigeria from podium participation in international sports.

“Nigeria will continue to wallow helplessly in darkness unless we appreciate the reality of going back to revive and resuscitate school sports,” said Dalung.

The representative of the Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Secondary School Education Board, Mr. Ajayi, also commended the school for organising a hitch-free sports festival that he said will go a long way in developing the talents that abound in the school.

“I also want to lend credence to a particular point made by the former minister of sports that it is not all students that will make it academically so extra-curricular activities such as sports will bring out the God-given talents in students so that they can become successful in future,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Principal of the school, Mrs Onugwu Ngozi Ann, promised to continue to provide the enabling environment for the students to combine sports with education.

“We are grateful to God for making it possible for us to organise this sports festival. I congratulate the winners and urge those who feel they are losers never to give up. We are all winners.

“The school will continue to ensure that students who are talented in sports are given all the necessary encouragement to excel,” pledged Onugwu.
