The German car giant are reported to be developing augmented reality glasses that will help ease the difficulty of parallel parking.
The glasses will use the latest technological advances to allow drivers to see ‘through’ the side and back of their car as if it was invisible.
The glasses will work by effectively ‘communicating’ with the car, so that when the driver goes into reverse, the side of the car will ‘disappear’ as external cameras project images of the surrounding street scene to allow easier parking.
According to the Financial Times, the glasses are under development at BMW’s research and development laboratory in California’s Silicon Valley.
Insiders said they plan to publicly demonstrate the technology for the first time at the Shanghai motor show in April.
One source said: ‘It’s about being a mobility provider – it’s not just the car.’
The glasses are intended as a rival to companies such as Microsoft and Google, with car manufacturers eager to keep up to date with a new generation of drivers.
Full details of the glasses remain top secret, but they are expected to include real-time information from the car such as speed.
