The Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN) has trained 150 coordinators and IT personnel drawn from health information management training institutions and colleges of health technology on electronic health records (EHR) software installation.

The registrar of the board, Alhaji Babagana Mustapha, stated this in Abuja during a two-day coordinator’s retreat and EHR software installation training organised by the board.

He said information and communication technology (ICT) keeps evolving and has become a necessary development that must be embraced by every aspect of the medical and allied professions, especially health information management which deals with patient’s information.

He said, “Globally today, patient’s information is being electronically handled with the aid of ICT for effectiveness and efficiency due to its reliability, accuracy, easy access and real time communication. All this cannot be achieved with traditional/paper- based health records system.”

While saying there is need for health information management professionals to be proactive in line with current trends and practices, he lamented the serious decline in the standards of training which resulted in producing un-employable graduates.

He said the board developed electronic health record training software in 2019 for training prospective professionals in order to strengthen their employment opportunities as graduates and properly fit into any health facilities that have deployed e-health records system.

He said the board was also collaborating with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to review curricular for National Diploma and Higher Diploma soon.

The immediate past registrar of the board, Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim Mami, said there are very important statistical data that could assist the country in planning its healthcare delivery system, and that would be easily and better transmitted and tracked via electronic health records.

He enjoined the coordinators of the training institutions to practice what they have learnt and step it down to other people in their institutions.
