Women in the predominantly farming and pastoralist communities of Fakkos in Bokkos local government area of Plateau State have commenced use of a grain processing centre jointly owned by the Fulani and Ron ethnic groups as part of efforts to ensure continuous peaceful co-existence between the two communities.
Daily Trust reports that the grain processing centre which is patronised by women of both ethnic groups according to a community member, Blessing John will further consolidate and harmonise relationship between the two groups adding that; “the grain processing centre is owned by both the Ron and Fulani women and with this centre, we don’t have to walk long distances to process our grains, at the same time, proceeds from the centre can be used to develop our communities.
”The centre which was built, equipped and handed over to the people by pro peace international organisation, Mercy Corps Nigeria is managed by 12 members of the Ron and Fulani ethnic groups of Fakkosin trust for the communities.
Mercy Corps Deputy Programme Manager, Sani Suleiman said the project was part of its interfaith economic activity to support the sustainability of dispute resolution agreements and foster peaceful economic coexistence, among conflicting communities through shared projects.
He said the organisation which is implementing peace building and development programmes in Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa and Kaduna States had through its economic activities established other community shared projects such as a farms in Bisichi, Jos South and a shared market in Butura-Kunnet, Bokkos local government areas of the State.
Management committee Chairman of Bokkos, LukaMakut Bwoi thanked the organisation for the project but admonished the women to use the centre to further the entrenchment of peace and unity between the Fulani and Ron.
