Boko Haram: 7 killed, soldiers wounded in Chibok village

At least 7 persons were killed including six soldiers when suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked a military base in the southern part of Borno state on Sunday evening, sources said.

It was learnt that the terrorist stormed a military settlement in Kuda, near Chibok town at exactly 4:30 pm engaging troops in a gun battle killing 6 soldiers including a master warrant officer.

A member of the vigilante group, Yohanna Bitrus said the attackers burnt down houses numbering 40 and carted away three vehicles after they had looted the whole community.

“They came in large number to attacks our soldier’s station in Kuda, they overpowered the soldiers and killed six soldiers and wounded 8 others.

“A woman was burnt in her house too.

“They equally burnt down more than 40 houses after they have looted the foodstuff and livestock.

“The federal government should urgently help us, we need more soldiers and equipment to be able to face these terrorists.” Bitrus said.

A military source who does not want his name mentioned confirmed the incidents stating that eight other soldiers in the on troops location.

“Yes, there was attacked on troops location yesterday, our gallant troops fought hard but we lost some soldiers and others were wounded.” A military source said.

Kuda village is just 3 kilometres away from Chibok town.

The military authorities were yet to confirm nor deny the incident as of the time of filing this report.

Chibok

Chibok is a Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria, located in the south of the state. Its headquarters are in the town of Chibok. It has an area of 1,350 km² and a population of 66,105 at the 2006 census.

The November 14 2014 attack on Chibok, where nearly 300 school girls were kidnapped by the Boko Haram insurgents attracted global attention.

Boko Haram

The Boko Haram insurgency began in 2009 in Borno state before spreading to other states in the North-East and other neighboring countries.

The UN Refugee Agency estimated that 26 million people in the Lake Chad region have been affected by the Boko Haram violence while more than 2.6 million displaced and over 36, 000 people dead.

It was reported that between the start of January and the end of November 2020, there were a total of 142 incidents involving Boko Haram or ISWAP insurgents in the three North Eastern Nigerian states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, making an average of 13 incidents a month.

Of these 142 events, 17 ended with no fatalities while at least 1,606 people were killed in the 125 fatal incidents, making an average of 13 deaths per violent event in the Boko Haram insurgency in 2020.
