What is the position of JIBWIS over the Boko Haram issue?

The Boko Haram is a secret cult that is aimed at giving the religion of Islam and Muslims a bad name. We believe that the sect’s aim is also to attack Muslims and at the same time dress like Muslims and attack Christians simply with the aim of giving Islam and Muslims a bad name. For instance, what happened in Bauchi State recently is a good example where a Christian lady was arrested trying to plant a bomb in a Church and the incident in Bayelsa State where a Christian man dressed in Muslim attires attempted to also plant a bomb in a Church so that people would think that it was the Muslims. The truth is that this group that you are seeing is sponsored by the Western powers because it was the same Western powers that predicted that Nigeria will break up by the year 2015. Therefore, I think it is those people that sponsor the people behind all the chaos. Apart from that, I learnt that some religious leaders are recently saying that since security agents cannot protect them they should be given the chance to protect themselves and that they no longer need protection from the Federal Government. You see, this kind of comment is unbecoming of leaders and I want to use this opportunity to call on all well-meaning Muslims and Christians not to support this kind of religious leaders. To me, this kind of people don’t want Nigeria to remain one.

What is the way out of this Boko Haram issue. Do you suggest negotiation with them?

What is surprising me is that whenever Muslims are killed; for instance, the killing of dozens of Muslims in Damaturu, Yobe State, people will sometimes say those who perpetrated the act are unknown, or people will sometimes say it is Boko Haram. This is showing that Boko Haram are some faceless group and now that an offer for negotiation is made to them it simply means that they are known. I believe that there is a lot of politics in this Boko Haram issue.

Did you ever interact with the late Muhammad Yusuf who was the leader of the Boko Haram sect?

All my life I never spoke with him or met him even for one minute. What I know is that when I first heard about the course he was championing in the name of Islam, I started preaching wherever I went against his principles because what he was preaching was entirely at variance with the teachings of Islam. It was a well known fact as confirmed by reliable sources that whenever he (Muhammad Yusuf) was arrested when he was alive it was some key politicians in this country, Christians for that matter, who usually went to bail him. Apart from that there was a former president in this country, a Christian too who, while in power, visited Muhammad Yusuf. I think there is need for us to look at these issues critically as a basis of finding solution to the Boko Haram crisis. This is a food for thought.
