Gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram on Monday night attacked two villages near Chibok in Borno State, killed five civilians and took away assorted foodstuff and livestock from the locals.

Sources said the assailants invaded Tohya and Wurojene villages, located 13 and 14 kilometers away from Chibok.

Dozens of houses and stores were also destroyed by the rampaging attackers who used petrol bombs in attacking the villages, locals from the two farming communities said

The attacks were launched less than a week after the abduction of over 30 Fulani women. Over 200 girls are still missing, nearly two months after 276 final year secondary school girls were abducted at a secondary school in Chibok.

Zamani Ema, a community leader in Tohya said the insurgents arrived around 7pm  and opened fire on unsuspecting villagers.

“There was serious confusion as we scampered for safety. We all fled to the bushes but in the morning, we found out that five people were killed in Tohya and Wurojene by the attackers,” he said.

Sama’ila Musa, another local said the attackers operated for over two hours before they left. “We could not return to our ruined villages even after they left because we were deeply terrified. Before they left, they loaded our foodstuff, chicken and goats into vehicles.

“I am sure they came from Sambisa Forest because they have unfettered access to all the surrounding villages from there,” he said.

A security source in Maiduguri confirmed the attack.
