Suspected Boko Haram insurgents Sunday shot and killed a businessman based in Maiduguri, Alhaji Gana, on his farmland in Bama Local Government Area of the Borno State, local source said.

The incident took place while harvesting beans in his farm where his four co-workers were also abducted. According to a family source, the gunmen forcefully abducted the four others but he was shot dead when he tried to resist being abducted. “Other nearby farmers who witnessed the incident from a distance said they saw him grappling with the gunmen for some time before he was overpowered by his assailants.

“The gunmen invaded the farm, rounded up the workers, and attempted to kidnap them. Alhaji Gana, who reportedly resisted the assailants, got shot. The attackers reportedly kidnapped four other individuals, leaving Alhaji-Gana’s body at the farm.”

A family member, Abdul Mohammed said that Alhaji Gana left Maiduguri on Sunday morning to oversee the harvest at his Bama farm, where he tragically lost his life “He informed his wife he was going to bring back some of the beans being harvested from his farm. Few hours later, they were called that he was killed by insurgents”.

It would be recalled that attacks on farmers have become an increasingly common and troubling occurrence, particularly during peak harvest season in Borno State.
