Ride-hailing platform Bolt has partnered with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to organise a road safety sensitisation programme for its driver-partners and couriers in Abuja as part of efforts to improve safety on Nigerian roads.

The exercise, held in collaboration with the FRSC RS7.1 FCT Sector Command, brought together more than 100 driver-partners and couriers who participated in practical sessions focused on responsible driving behaviour, traffic law compliance and defensive driving techniques.

Officials of the road safety agency led the training sessions, educating participants on critical safety issues including fatigue management, prevention of drunk driving, and adherence to traffic regulations.

During the programme, drivers were guided on key road safety rules such as speed limits, proper use of seatbelts, safe overtaking practices and general road discipline aimed at reducing avoidable accidents.

The training also highlighted the dangers associated with fatigue and alcohol-impaired driving, with participants encouraged to prioritise adequate rest and responsible conduct while operating on Nigerian roads.

Speaking on the initiative, the Head of Regulatory and Policy, Africa at Bolt, Weyinmi Aghadiuno, said safety remains central to the company’s operations.

According to her, mobility platforms must go beyond technology by equipping drivers with practical knowledge that enables them to operate safely in complex traffic environments.

“Safety is fundamental to how mobility platforms operate, and it goes beyond technology. Partnering with the FRSC allows us to equip our driver-partners and couriers with practical knowledge to navigate Nigerian roads safely every day,” she said.

Aghadiuno added that the collaboration was aimed at ensuring that both drivers and riders feel confident using the platform while also contributing to safer cities.

The programme also referenced insights from Bolt’s Safety Perception Survey released last year, which showed that about two-thirds of respondents believe ride-hailing services help reduce drunk driving by providing a reliable alternative for transportation.

According to Bolt, strengthening driver education through partnerships with regulatory agencies will help ensure that these safety benefits extend beyond riders to other road users.

Also speaking at the event, the FCT Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Corps Commander Felix N. Theman, commended the initiative and stressed the importance of partnerships in improving road safety outcomes.

He noted that road safety requires collective responsibility among drivers, regulators and private sector organisations.
