Prominent politicians, academics, journalists, lawyers and civil society figures on Wednesday gathered in Abuja to honour the late scholar-activist, Dr Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed, at a symposium, book presentation and launch of an endowment fund established to preserve his legacy and support his family.

The symposium, themed “Scholars and the Social Question in Nigeria: Reflections on the Life of A.S. Mohammed,” was organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) in collaboration with CITAD.

The event, held in Abuja, attracted participants from across Nigeria’s intellectual, political and media communities, reflecting the broad influence of the late sociologist, journalist and socialist thinker.

The occasion featured the public presentation of his book, ‘The Satiru Revolt of Peasants and Slaves in the Sokoto Caliphate’, a major scholarly work examining resistance against feudal and colonial oppression in northern Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, participants described the late Mohammed as a committed progressive whose life was devoted to justice, academic freedom, Pan-Africanism and the struggle for social transformation.

To sustain his ideals and support the family he left behind, organisers also highlighted the work of the Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed Endowment Fund Committee, chaired by Senator Yahaya Abdullahi.

According to the chairman of the committee, the fund is designed to secure the educational future and welfare of his children while also managing the estate he bequeathed.

He added that the committee’s terms of reference include ensuring payment of school fees, welfare support, nutrition, clothing, periodic needs such as Sallah and holiday support, employment assistance after graduation and other aspects of their general well-being.

The late Mohammed, who died on December 11, 2025, was remembered for his decades-long service in academia, journalism and activism, having taught at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, while also contributing to media and national policy institutions.

He was also active in socialist movements, anti-apartheid campaigns and gender advocacy platforms, including ASUU, Women in Nigeria (WIN), and the Socialist Congress of Nigeria.

Speakers at the event said the large turnout from diverse sectors was evidence that his work transcended ideology, profession and region.

For many attendees, the gathering was not only a book launch but a celebration of a life of scholarship, activism and enduring national relevance.
