According to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Faruk Malami Yabo, the programme which is under the state government’s Subsidy Re-Investment Programmme  (SURE-P) is aimed at assisting people at the grassroots.
He said with the programme which is designed to empower rural dwellers, the poultry industry would be enhanced with thousands of the unemployed undertaking poultry as a means of getting a livelihood.
Yabo noted that already, the state government has commenced the training of 11,500 unemployed people in modern poultry farming.
He said 500 beneficiaries were selected from each of the 23 local government areas of the state for the empowerment programme on poultry with three training centres at Bodinga, Kware and Goronyo.
The commissioner revealed that each beneficiary would be given 15 chickens, a 20kg bag of chicken feed and a modern cage at the end of the 3-day training.
He added that they would also get a monthly grant of N5,000 each to assist them in sustaining their businesses.
He assured that after this batch, others would benefit from the empowerment exercise.
Yabo stressed the state government’s commitment towards boosting poultry production in the state and expressed optimism that Sokoto would have a robust poultry industry with the programme.
