In an interview with Daily Trust in Yola, Muhammad Ahmad, farmer said his borehole is the secret behind the progress of his business as it provided him with enough water to cater for his pond and enabled him to save N1,000 daily that he would have spent in buying water.
His stock multiplied from a few to 400 fish since he started in the last few months with prospective buyers trooping to buy from his farm.
He noted the disadvantage of reliance on water vendors as the source of water for fish farming, adding, “borehole is the critical facility in fish farming business in most communities in Adamawa because fish need fresh water to grow well. You hardly make profit when you spend N1,000 daily buying water from hawkers,” he explained.
Ahmad also said he make extra money from selling water to hawkers who in turn supply residents at Waziri Pate Lane and environs while the households around the fish pond benefit from free supply of water in their buckets and jerry cans.
He appealed to wealthy individuals in Adamawa to explore the profitability in the farming sector for improved food production, wealth creation and creation of job opportunities away from government.
“The business is more profitable than most people think; the wealthy people in this state look down on agriculture because they think it is not worth doing. I call on them to try fish farming and see for themselves,” he added.
He also called on government to assist young people by providing them with the facility to start farming as a business to generate employment, saying many people have passion for the business but do not have the means to start.
