Academic activities at the Sir Kashim College of Education, Maiduguri have been suspended indefinitely yesterday after students clashed with police during a protest against lack of accommodation.

Students were asked to vacate the college before 2 pm in a statement issued by the management.

The students have reportedly blocked major roads in the morning in protest over the lack of hostel spaces.

Most of the students were made to pay N3, 500 instead of N2, 500 as accommodation fees, yet many have been living in squatter settlements without cogent explanation, one student has said.

President, National Union of Borno State Students, Mohammad Grema  Mohammad said the college, which housed three other institutions including Umar Ibn Ibrahim El Kanemi College of Education, Science and Technology, Bama, Borno State University and College of Business and Management Studies, Konduga, Konduga was closed as a result of the protest. He said stakeholders will meet to resolve the problem.

Meanwhile, the college provost, Abba Mala has confirmed by telephone that the situation was brought under control and “the management has made a statement to security personnel.”
