Witnesses said the gunmen must have trailed the officer from his Madori residence in Jere local government area. They said the suspects brandished Kalashnikov rifles that were hid under flowing gowns, scared people away and then shot the officer before they zoomed away.

 

Borno State Police Commissioner, Mohammed Jinjiri Abubakar confirmed the incident on the telephone.  “We have lost another senior police officer attached to the Maiduguri Government House this morning (Friday),” he said. He said the police and other security agents are intensifying efforts to control the serial killings in the state.

Inspector Kadai was killed less than 24 hours after the killing of Alhaji Abba Mukhtar Abba Tijjani, the District Head of Mairari in Maiduguri on Thursday. Still, on Thursday, a policeman was shot by some gunmen at about 5.30pm around the Monday Market in the metropolis while conducting a stop-and-search operation with his colleagues. Police authorities said the victim did not die and is now receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).

Series of killings have continued unabated in Maiduguri and environs in the last few weeks. Police authorities say the gunmen have an “assassination list” which they are carefully executing. Borno State governor-elect had severally said his first priority when he takes over power on May, 29th will be to have a dialogue with the members of the Yusufiyya (Boko Haram) movement. The group had on the other hand said they want comprehensive enforcement of the Sharia system which according to them cannot be possible under the Constitution of Nigeria and the current political system.
