Attention given to infrastructural development especially the construction of housing estates in Maiduguri by the Borno State government is responsible for the ability of the state capital to accommodate all the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
National Coordination of Shelter for Life, a Non-Governmental Organization advocating for good shelter for all, Dr Abdulfatai Musa Saromi told Daily Trust at the weekend in Maiduguri that the construction of standard housing estates in Maiduguri by past and present administrations in the state has helped a lot in accommodating workers and thousands of IDPs.
He specifically commended the present administration in the state for embarking on the construction of Legacy Garden Estate at Bulunkutu along the airport road which he noted is over 80 percent completed.
The estate designed to provide 1,000 blocks of four flats each is being built simultaneously along with Gubio Housing Estate that is meant to provide 400 housing units also in the state capital.
Another set of 1,000 housing units known as Bakassi Housing Estate is being built along Biu road.
The Kashim Shettima-led administration also built 475 two-bedroom housing units at Yerwa Peace Community Housing Estate for displaced victims of Boko Haram attacks whose houses were destroyed at Bulaburin Garanam in the state.
Workers are not left behind as the state government constructed a 20-housing estate Doctors Quarters at Mailafiya street in the state capital now accommodating medical doctors in Maiduguri.
A 300 one-bedroom housing units known as Ali Monguno Teachers Village was constructed in the state capital for teachers but is currently housing IDPs displaced by Boko Haram insurgency.
Dr Saromi who was in the state to donate relief materials to IDPs said, “Some of the housing estates built by the present administration in the state despite the ongoing insurgency cannot be found in most states of the federation.
“I wonder what the governor would have turned this state to if there was no crisis. If not for those structures now that are containing workers and IDPs, what do you think could have happened? Borno is actually leading in property,” he said.
Other estates in the state that are providing shelter to workers and even the business people include: 202 Housing Estate consisting 202 housing units in two and three-bedroom flats and 303 Housing Estate consisting 303 one, two and three-bedroom flats both built by the defunct Governor Mala Kachalla’s administration.
The immediate past administration of Governor Ali Modu Sheriff has also constructed 1,000 units of one, two, three and four-bedroom flats housing estate and 777 Housing Estate consisting 777 houses in one, two, three and four-bedroom units that have since been occupied.
The Sheriff’s administration built similar estate with 555 housing units along Gamboru road.
