Brazil were seeded in Group B but finished third in the standings after surprise leaders Switzerland shocked them 1-0 in the final group match. Meanwhile, Mexico defeated Japan 2-0 in the other match to finish second on six points.

The young South Americans managed only three points and will now have to await the results of the other group games to know whether they will remain in the tournament as one of the best losers.

The young Brazilians, who have featured in 11 U-17 tournaments, last failed to go past the first round 22 years ago in Canada.

The first round of Nigeria 2009 will be completed on Sunday with final matches in Groups E and F.
