The Department of State Services (DSS) has finally arraigned Godwin Emefiele, suspended governor of the Central Bank (CBN) in court.

He was arraigned on two-count charge before Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The first count was on possessing a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a licence, while the second count was having in his possession 123 rounds of live ammunition (Cartridges) without a licence.

Both charges are said to be in contravention of sections 4 and 8 of the Firearms Act Cap F28 Laws of the Federation, 2004, punishable under section 27 (1)(b)(i) of the Act.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

His lawyers led by former NBA president, Joseph Daudu (SAN), filed for his bail.

Emefiele has been in detention since President Bola Tinubu suspended him last month.

The secret police had picked him up at his Lagos residence and flew him to Abuja.

In protesting over the non-compliance with the orders of high courts in Abuja, some group of lawyers on July 17 filed a contempt proceeding before a Federal High Court in Abuja to commit the director-general of the SSS, Yusuf Bichi to jail on allegations of contempt of court.

The lawyers, led by Maxwell Opara and Ahmed Tijani on Monday accused Bichi of disobeying different orders of M. A. Hassan, Hamza Muazu and Bello Kawu were disobeyed by the service despite the orders being served on them.

But the DSS stirred controversy when it referred to the lead lawyer as a counsel of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
