The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rescheduled its botched elections for March 12, 2015.

The union picked the date after hours of its national executive council meeting in Abuja on Wednesday attended by its present leaders and ex-leaders including Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state.

The body’s national delegates’ conference where an election for a new executive was holding was being held ended abruptly last Thursday when aggrieved members seized and smashed the ballot boxes.

Trouble was reported to have started last week when a member of the National Union of Electrical Employees (NUEE) raised an alarm that his ballot paper contained the name of an aspirant twice, claiming that it was an effort to rig the election. Tempers had been high following claims by some union members of irregularity in the whole process.

Mr Joel Ajero who is the Secretary General of NUEE and Ayuba Wabba, the president of the Medical and Health Workers Union were contesting to succeed Umar Abdulwaheed as president of the NLC. Earlier on Wednesday, the president of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) Igwe Achese had stepped down as a third contester, urging his supporters to vote Aejero.
