Police in Anambra State on Thursday arraigned one Chukwuemeka Uwalaka, a 27-year-old bricklayer, for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl.
The defendant appeared before the state’s Children, Sexual and Gender-based Violence Offences Court in Awka.
He was arraigned on a one-count charge of defilement, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Inspector Chinyere Okechukwu, informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on August 17 in Awka-Etiti, Idemili South Local Government Area. The victim’s mother, Mrs. Chinasa Okoye, reported receiving a call from a vigilance group member who stated that they had caught the defendant having sexual relations with her daughter.
The matter was then reported to the police.
Okechukwu stated that the offence violates Section 130(2) (a) (b) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2022.
In his defense, Uwalaka claimed he did not know the girl and would never get involved with a minor, as he has a girlfriend.
He also claimed he did not make any statement at the police station.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. U.E. Onochie, granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦1 million with one surety in the same amount.
The case was adjourned until September 10, for a report on compliance with the bail conditions.
