Bridging the gap between higher institutions and workplace needs
Strong investments in the education system would bridge the gap between higher institutions and workplace requirements, the Board of Trustees Chairman of People Expertise and Excellence Foundation (PEEF), Engineer, Abdullahi Bukar has said.
He made the assertion at the foundations second workshop on ‘bridging the gap between the education system and the real world,’ on Thursday in Abuja. He said one of the drivers of Nigeria’s very low human capital index was the gap between the output from the educational system and the needs of the workplace.
He said the problem could be addressed by “boosting investment in the education sector which will help in the overhaul of the educational curriculum and the development of the requisite skill sets that administrators and educators are in dire need of.”
Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) Dr Mas’ud Adamu Kazaure said skills, knowledge and competence are needed to drive the economy. He said in 2013 a total of 1, 167, 740 jobs were created out which 54 per cent was from the informal sector, 37 per cent from the formal (private) and 9 per cent in the public sector.
He said the skill crisis intensified because “higher institutions are supply driven not demand driven.”
