Poetry promoters, Words Rhymes & Rhythm (WRR), have called on young Nigerian poets to enter for the June edition of Brigitte Poirson Poetry Contest (BPPC) 2017.

One of the organisers, Kukogho Iruesiri Samson said that BPPC, a monthly writing contest is aimed at “rewarding the under-appreciated talents of young Nigerian poets”. 

He explained that it was instituted in February 2015 in honor of Brigitte Poirson, a French poet and lecturer, who has over the years worked assiduously to promote and support African poetry.

He added that the contest which is in its third season has grown to be one of the country’s most popular, especially among younger poets.

“In this month’s edition, there will be no central theme, this was inspired by the fact that themes sometimes limit the poet’s creativity” he said. The poet is at liberty to write at will.

Participating poets are expected to simply verse ‘As the muse leads’, expressing the freedom of the poet to follow his or her muses’ direction when creating. 

Samson explained that the winning poem will be awarded a cash prize, the top 10 poems will be published in the annual BPPC anthology and they will also be  automatically entered for  the Albert Jungers Poetry Prize (AJPP) 2017 which was won last year by Kanyinsola Olorunnisola.
