Hundreds of Nigerians today marched to the National Assembly in a protest to demand the release of over 200 school girls abducted in Chibok, Borno state two weeks ago by insurgents.

The protest tagged “Rescue for Chibok Girls” started around 3pm at the Unity Fountain, Abuja and proceeded to the National Assembly under heavy rainfall where the protesters met with the leadership of the House.

According to the convener of the protest, a former Minister of Education, Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili, the protest becomes necessary to compel the federal government to take urgent steps in securing the release of the abducted girls.

The Senate President, David Mark; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal; and Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha were among the members of the National Assembly that welcomed the protesters to the nation’s legislative chambers and received their protest letter.

The lawmakers assured the protesters of government’s commitment to rescuing the school girls.

It would be recalled that over 200 female students of Federal Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State were abducted early dawn on April 14, 2014 in their school premises.

About two weeks later, the school management and Borno state government claimed that over forty of the abducted school girls have escaped from their captors and have been reunited with their families.
