Budgetary allocations to agric not enough for expected growth – Minister

Minister of Agriculture, Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Muhammad Abubakar, Thursday said despite the successes being recorded, Nigeria’s allocations to agriculture were not enough to stimulate the expected growth.

He disclosed this while presenting the ministry’s 2022 budget estimates before a joint sitting of the House Committees on Agricultural Production and Services and the Committee on Rural Development.

Represented by Permanent Secretary Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, he said the annual allocation to agriculture fell short of the approved percentage of national budget to be set aside by African countries for the sector.

He said: “Less than 2% of the national budget is committed to agriculture as against 10% agreed by Africa Heads of State (Malabo Declaration).”
