Buhari committed to LG autonomy – Akume

George Akume

The Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, George Akume, says President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to seeing the local government enjoy financial autonomy.

He said this at a workshop organised by the Association of Chairmen of Local Government Service Commissions in Abuja Tuesday.

He said: “This workshop wouldn’t have come at a better time. President Buhari’s administration is committed to lifting up 150 million Nigerians out of poverty from the grassroots,” he said

He said the Executive Order 10, which the president signed granting financial autonomy to local governments, was a mark of his commitment to revitalising the grassroots.

Daily Trust report that Executive Order had been nullified by the Supreme Court in February.

The chairman of the association, Bem Melladu, said: “We would like a situation where the nomenclature of the local government is the same throughout the federation.”
