Muhammadu Buhari has been sworn in as president of Nigeria for a term of four years. He takes over from ex-president Goodluck Jonathan who had been in the saddle for the past six years following the death of Musa Yar’adua.

Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN) Justice Mahmood Mohammed administered the oath of office at about 10:50am.

Holding a copy of the Glorious Qu’ran, Buhari swore to administer and steer the country towards prosperity.

Earlier, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo was sworn-in as Vice President by the CJN at about 10:37am.

The inauguration of Buhari of the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC) marks a watershed in the political history of Nigeria as it is the first time an opposition party would wrestle power from the ruling party.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had been in power for 16 years since 1999 when Nigeria returned from military rule to democracy.
