Buhari medical trip: A jamboree?

At the height of the campaign and even, when he was sworn in as the president, it was clearly made known that there is no more room for medical jamboree for officials of government seeking medical treatment outside the country.
But less than a year in the saddle, the President Muhammadu Buhari, has jetted out to seek further treatment on his left ear in London at the expense of the government.
The case that took the President Buhari can be treated right at home and his travelling out clearly shows that the president has no confidence in the ability of the resident Doctors of this country.
The treatment of Ear, Nose and throat E.N.T. can be done in Nigeria as there are competent doctors here. It signaled a departure from directives barring government officials from seeking medical care abroad. With the latest development of the president going to London for medical treatment, the door is now wide open for top officials of his administration to also go abroad for treatment of even cough and malaria.
The country’s health sector would continue to be in bad shape and there is no confidence on the ability of the doctors by the people in government as such, the elites would continue patronizing the hospitals outside the country for medical attention.
The president needs to boost public confidence in our health care delivery system. He can do that through demonstrating that our doctors are among the best in the world, and can treat the most delicate medical cases.
