Now that the Buhari administration had marked one year in office, I feel a lot has been achieved especially in terms of security, fight against corruption and in restoring country’s dignity in the face of the world.
The present administration has been burdened by high expectations and a lot of people believed that everything will be okay from the swearing in date.
However, the Buhari-led administration is faced with unexpected challenges such as economic recession, oil price slump, fuel crisis, naira devaluation, insecurity, pro Biafra agitators, Niger Delta Avengers etc which impinged on their plans. As a result of this, the government had made apologies and excuses.
I support this administration but I don’t believe it’s doing enough. They made some hard decision at a very wrong time (fuel subsidy removal). I don’t believe that the government is broke because it claimed that it has recovered huge sums of money looted by officials in the previous government. If this is true then the Buhari administration has no justification for performing below expectation.
For instance, millions have been spent on legislative cars for members of the National and states Assembly, while the country wallowed in financial insolvency. I agree with Dr Farooq Kperogi, who wrote that, “we’re broke not because of the need of the poor but because of the greed of the rich”.
The hardship inflicted upon the masses are gradually becoming unbearable, there is need to make urgent adjustment to address those hardships. In line with this at least two things have to be done, one, reversal of the fuel subsidy removal and two, opening of boarders for food importation so that the suffering would be minimized.
