National President of the Nigerian Institute of Building, Mr Chucks Omeife stated this at the 43rd builders conference/annual general meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said that the 17 million national housing deficit is impinges on the very essence and role of the building industry, adding that the conference was held to proffer solutions to the national housing needs.
“While the reason for this situation has been adduced to so many factors ranging from government’s lack of political will power, the land use act, lack of virile mortgage system, high cost of building materials etc. the role of technology, methodology and use of emerging production system has been undervalued in the entire spectrum of housing delivery in the country,” Omeife said.
In her welcome address, Minister for Lands, Housing and Urban Development Ms Amal Pepple said the theme of the 43rd annual conference, “Transformation of the Building Industry – Possibilities and Realities” is apt and underscores the need to transform the building industry for sustainable national development.
Pepple described the building industry as a key driver of the global economy, saying its transformation is compelling for rapid national development.
The 5-day conference had in attendance professionals in the building industry from within and outside the country.
