The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has called for the construction of eco-friendly buildings to mitigate the risks associated with climate change.

The council’s chairman, Samson Opaluwah, gave the advice yesterday during a workshop for members of the Nigerian Institute of Builders in Facilities Management (NIBFM), particularly in light of recent windstorm damage in Ogun State following heavy rainfall on April 20th.

Opaluwah acknowledged the global increase in climate change and highlighted the crucial role of facility managers in ensuring the safety of infrastructures and properties.

He stressed the need for green buildings, which are environmentally friendly structures that minimise carbon emissions and contribute to preserving the ozone layer.

He also mentioned that only the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and two other states have adopted the council’s Projects Monitoring & Evaluation Unit (PEMU), designed to prevent hazards during building construction.

He encouraged other state governments to utilise PEMU, describing it as a public service provided by the council for the benefit of the country.

Builder Olufemi Akinsola, the National Chairman of NIBFM, explained that the workshop aimed to train professionals across various building disciplines, including quantity surveyors, architects, and engineers, in the field of facility management.
