Vice President of the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE) Saka Umar has attributed the incidence of collapsed structures in Nigeria to  violation of building codes.
He made this observation in llorin penultimate weekend while speaking with Daily Trust.
Umar identified expired life span of materials used for building construction, lack of maintenance and the use of substandard materials as other causes of collapsed buildings.
He appealed to the federal government to empower the Council for Registration of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN) to enable it deal with erring offenders to stem the tide and save lives.
Umar stressed the need for craftsmen and technicians to also register with the association and broaden their knowledge to enable them build standard structures.
He urged Nigerians to patronize registered engineers and refrain from patronizing quacks.
On the dichotomy between the holders of Higher National Diploma and university degree holders in Engineering, he said the association is working towards ensuring the elimination of the trend.
