Building collapse: SON seizes sub-standard materials in Maiduguri

Worried by endless reports of building collapse in the country caused by using sub-standard building materials, the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has begun raiding and confiscating  sub-standard iron roads used in buildings  in Maiduguri,  the Borno State capital.
The operation led by the State Coordinator, Adamu Ahmed Saleh  saw the  raiding of  several iron rod shops and collection of  samples of six millimetres iron rods suspected to be sub-standard which  would be  subjected to  laboratory  test in Enugu.
Saleh told newsmen during the raid that SON would not fold its arms and watch sub-standard building materials that have led to building collapse being sold in the market.
He said, “We are raiding iron rod and steel shops used in building and construction to ascertain conformity to standard specification in Nigeria.
‘‘We are conducting physical conformity tests which consist of measuring the diameter of each size of iron rod and its length as well as manufacturers identification symbol.”
