This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of 2013 annual conference of Registered Quantity Surveyors organized by the Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria [QSRBN] and the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors [NIQS].
The surveyors, in the communiqué, further noted that the practice environment for the building sector in Nigeria is characterized by hostile competition, lack of political will and expanding body of knowledge, adding that,   in recent times, the identity of the Quantity Surveyors profession appears to be in crisis due to deliberately created roadblocks.
“There is a huge gap between the potentials of RQs and the operating space they are allowed in. This has affected service delivery by some of the practitioners.  The knowledge and skills acquired by the Quantity Surveyors need to be improved upon to enable them to compete effectively in the global market place.    Globalization is impacting heavily on Quantity Surveyors in Nigeria.   Increasingly, the clients of Quantity Surveyors are very discerning of global best practices for the profession; thus, their high expectations from RQS. Quantity Surveyors need to be innovative in order to retain their relevance in the B&C sector and economy at large.”
The theme of this year’s annual conference was: “Quantity Surveying Profession – Unbundling the Latent Competencies and Developing New Frontiers”.
