The Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA) at the Bayero University Kano (BUK) has opened applications for AgriHacking 2.0 competition to support and empower innovators in the agricultural sector.
The call for the applications was launched during the third annual “Open Day” organised by the centre to interact with stakeholders and showcase some of the achievements it recorded so far.
The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the university, Prof Sagir Adamu Baffa, who was represented by his Deputy, Prof Sani Muhammad Gumel, explained that AgriHacking 2.0 aimed to identify and nurture new talents, drive sustainable solutions and create wealth while addressing environmental and socio-economic challenges.
He explained that last year’s AgriHacking competition was a tremendous success, where they received an overwhelming response with 94 innovators after a rigorous selection process and that 10 outstanding candidates were chosen to pitch their ideas from which five startups emerged victorious, benefitting from mentorship and support that had now positioned their products for market readiness.

He urged students, youths and women to seize the opportunity and show their talent and creativity and also create wealth while addressing the critical environmental and socio-economic challenges faced by “our” dryland regions.
He said, “I call upon all our students, youths and women to seize this incredible opportunity. Show us your commitment to making a difference in the field of agriculture.”
Similarly, the director of the centre and chief host of the event, while giving his welcoming address, stated that the centre recorded many successes in moving the country’s agricultural sector forward.
He explained that lately the centre organised an event with people from business, agriculture, banking and other fields to discuss how agriculture, university and business could work seamlessly to move the country forward.
